If you\u2019ve ever watched *Antiques Roadshow*\u2014the BBC version, the PBS version, whichever one\u2014you know the moment. Someone pulls a piece of jewelry out of a bag; the appraiser takes it, turns it over, and holds it up to the light. Then comes the price\u2014and the reaction.<\/p>\n

It's really a great TV show. And it has probably done more than anything else in recent history to pique people's curiosity about the value of old jewelry.<\/p>\n

But there are a few things worth understanding about what you're actually watching.<\/p>\n

What the show does well<\/h2>\n

The basic principle is sound. Old jewelry can be worth much more than people expect, and the reasons why it increases in value are very real.<\/p>\n

The manufacturer matters. In an episode of the BBC version of the show, a guest brought a brooch adorned with jewelry from Lacloche Fr\u00e8res, described by the appraiser as \u00aba very distinguished house that rivaled Cartier.\u00bb The piece had previously been appraised at 5,400 $. The show\u2019s appraisal came in at 13,000 $. The difference wasn\u2019t due to the stones, but to the person who made it. (Source<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Condition matters. A piece that has never been worn and is in its original condition is worth more than a similar piece that has been cleaned, repaired, or altered. This comes up repeatedly on the show, and it\u2019s true in real life as well.<\/p>\n

Age matters, but not always in the way people think it does. Georgian and early Victorian pieces command significant premiums among collectors. The same is true for Art Deco pieces in their original condition. But age alone does not make an object valuable. A very old piece in poor condition, made by an unknown designer, and lacking any particular rarity, might still be worth little more than its scrap value.<\/p>\n

What the show gets wrong\u2014or, at least, what it leaves out<\/h2>\n

The appraisals presented on *Antiques Roadshow* are approximate verbal estimates, not official appraisals. The show itself makes this clear: \u00abThe value of an item depends on many factors, including the condition of the item itself, market trends for that type of item, and where the item will be sold.\u00bb (Source<\/a>) The date of the appraisal also matters: values change over time, and an amount quoted on television five years ago may be significantly different from what the same item would be worth today.<\/p>\n

The show also focuses almost entirely on collectible value and auction value\u2014that is, the maximum amount an item could fetch under ideal circumstances, with the right buyer in the room. This differs from what a piece is worth on the open market today, or what a precious metals buyer would offer based solely on the metal content.<\/p>\n

Even experts can make mistakes. The show\u2019s appraisers have been known to overlook certain details, misidentify origins, underestimate rarity, or simply give the wrong value.<\/p>\n

The Difference Between Television and Reality<\/h2>\n
